Joined by Qubek and Shunk for the day and meeting up with our predecessors from Xmob and some of the local writers we knew only by name, back in the day for a lot of reminiscing and laughs.
For any area, a legal space to paint is a valuable asset which provides young creative minds a place to practice their art, without the need to seek permission or accreditation of any sort. There are numerous 'managed' spaces in the city, however, permission is still needed to paint. For an impulsive young person to whom art is a holistic therapy of sorts; the idea of needing to apply or even having the confidence to reach out and see their work of enough value to undergo the judgement of a panel, a managed site does not work. A fully legal, open site like this is only governed by Hip Hop and the principles of the culture which dictate respect and hierarchy by the level of skill and dedication of the piece. This natural progression makes space available for all wishing to progress their personal artistic and benefits the community.
Thank you to Jay Sharples for inviting me to this event, knowing that the place and time was poignant for me. Much love and respect.
